The Challenge
Property developer J Dapper has made it his mission to revive “Old Vegas” and is taking the arts district to new levels. In this endeavor, he acquired the Old Western Cab building, preserved as much of the old building as possible, and totally retrofitted the space to be usable. Now there is office space with access to a rooftop deck and a restaurant within the building, making this a desirable destination when visiting the Downtown Arts District.
The Dapper team wanted to use wood inside and outside for cohesive design. They wanted something with rich texture as deep as our Vegas roots and that would withstand our harsh environment. Dapper has redefined the space with the best of biophilic design to a whole new level by having the entire building renovated around a live tree growing within its walls. This building also has a personal connection to Dapper, as it was previously owned by his wife’s father and is now named after him.
The Solution
Thermory Kodiak Spruce was presented as a solution for all surfaces. It can be seen surrounding the building in traditional and unconventional ways. It is used as cladding both inside and out, with custom-sized S4S made for the trellises and lattice shade structures. In addition, there is a Thermory Kodiak matching rooftop deck.
The Results
This project is a testament to the old and new, and has aided in the elevation of the downtown area. Thermory Kodiak was used to preserve and remodel the old space, giving new life to the old and showing a respect for the area unseen before.
This project is also an excellent example of how the wood performs in our Vegas climate. After 4 years, the wood has been maintained to keep the space looking beautiful
