The Challenge
Silverton set out to fully renovate its pool area, adding an outdoor patio bar and new cabana-style pool decks. As a cowboy-themed casino, the design needed to reflect that Western aesthetic, and the architect initially specified reclaimed wood to achieve the desired look.
While reclaimed wood offered the right visual appeal, we had concerns about its quality, durability, and long-term maintenance. Reclaimed materials can often come with what many call a “barn wood surprise,” meaning the wood may be rotten, unstable, or ultimately unusable. It also comes without warranties and is not well suited for the harsh desert climate. Additional concerns included flaking or deteriorating wood in the bar area where food and drinks would be served.
Beyond durability, the architect wanted to elevate the space into something more country chic and luxurious, incorporating high-end elements such as $10,000 chandeliers in the cabanas.
The Solution
To achieve the desired aesthetic without compromising performance, we recommended Thermory products for both the cladding and decking applications. Thermory Knotty Pine was selected for the wall cladding to deliver the rustic character the project called for while remaining mindful of budget considerations. The natural knots and texture provided the authentic Western feel the architect envisioned, without the unpredictability associated with reclaimed wood.
For the decking, we specified Thermory Ash to ensure long-term durability in a high-traffic, poolside environment. Thermory Ash is thermally modified for enhanced stability, resistance to moisture, and improved performance in harsh climates. This made it an ideal choice for the desert setting, where extreme heat and sun exposure demand materials that can withstand constant environmental stress.
By combining Knotty Pine for visual warmth and charm with Ash for strength and resilience, we were able to deliver a cohesive design that met the architectural vision while providing reliability, longevity, and reduced maintenance for the property.
The Results
Design Intent
The finished space delivers exactly what was envisioned: a striking environment where rustic character meets refined luxury. Warm wood tones, natural textures, and upscale design elements come together to create a poolside experience that feels both authentic and elevated.
Durability
Two years later, the materials continue to perform beautifully. Despite constant exposure to intense desert sun, heavy foot traffic from hotel guests, and high-energy pool parties, the decking and cladding have held up exceptionally well. The result is a pool area that not only looks stunning but also functions reliably in a demanding environment.
The elevated aesthetic enhances the overall guest experience, encouraging visitors to stay longer, rent cabanas, and spend more time enjoying the Swimmin’ Hole.
